Digital Musicology and Music Theory

Music21 is a Python-based toolkit for computer-aided musicology.

People use music21 to answer questions from musicology using computers, to study large datasets of music, to generate musical examples, to teach fundamentals of music theory, to edit musical notation, study music and the brain, and to compose music (both algorithmically and directly).

The DCML explores music from the cognitive, computational, musicological and psychological perspectives. It combines modern algorithmic methods, corpus research, music-theoretical expertise and experimental approaches to conduct research in four main areas: musical structure-building, musicological corpus research, the cognitive foundations of music and computational modeling.

This overarching effort of our lab aims to examine the nature and development of tonality and tonal harmony as well as counterpoint and musical forms across a broad timespan comprising a wide variety of historical styles (between ca. 1500 and today). They are in the process of compiling a large corpus of music with expert annotations of tonal harmony, counterpoint, and musical form, using newly developed annotation standards.

The Centre for Digital Music is a world-leading, multidisciplinary research group in the field of music & audio Technology.

https://www.sonicvisualiser.org/ is one of their projects. Sonic Visualiser is a free, open-source application for Windows, Linux, and Mac, designed to be the first program you reach for when want to study a music recording closely. It's designed for musicologists, archivists, signal-processing researchers, and anyone else looking for a friendly way to look at what lies inside the audio file.
