Background
This site is the continuation of my old site that I used for years for my lessons in music theory at the Prince Claus Conservatoire Groningen. The old site can still be looked up by using the Waybackmachine. (NB In that case choose for the capture of december 19 2025 and the url www[.]skole[.]nl. And be patient, downloading pages takes some time.
NB I will be working on the reconstruction of the site the coming months. This means that minor changes can occur. I will leave the chosen structure (menus, categories and articles) intact. So, if you share links to content they will continue to work in most cases.

Retirement
Because I am retired, there are no references to classes, lessons or programs anymore. Therefore this site does not reflect a Music Theory Program, but my thinking around music theory in the service of the development of personal knowledge and skills that are necessary to become a musician.1
Music theory: usefulness and relevance
Music theory has always been helpful in muscal practice for me personally with:
- reducing complexity
- learning to see and recognize patterns and principles in music (insight and understanding)
- creating an overview (main issues and side issues)
- acting elegantly and fluently in musical practice handling musical concepts
- communicating about music with conviction based on knowledge and expertise
Approach
I have worked for years in a layout with knowledge domains. These knowledge domains are to be at service of learning or research questions. In my opinion a musician is always operating with a researching attitude. In the quest for answers several knowledge domains will be used. An eclectic approach therefore, aiming at the construction of knowledge, the creation of meaning and the development of craftmanship (musical mastery). In this context working models play an important role. They help a student to get gpoing and keep goin.
When conducting research on music and music theory, cognitive accents are inevitable. I tried to benefit from insights from several areas such as epistemology, knowledge representation, knowledge modeling, learning psychology ((social) constructivism), hermeneutics and phenomenology.

Besides skole.nl I have several other sites with a specific focus: NB all of these are the coming months under construction; I will try to keep them online as good as possible.
https://h5p.skole.nl: a sandbox with examples how HTML5 (check www.h5p.org) can attribute to education with more interactivity and time and place independent learning.
https://wiebebuis.github.io/atv_pcc: an (evolving) semantic network made with www.obsidian.md about music and music theory. It is about to be drastically adapted because I recently discovered how I should have approached it... Unfortunately only in Dutch (NL); Obsidian and multilingual content is still a bit problematic.
https://wiebebuis.nl: my personal site about activities and things I want to share in the future: a blog, book reviews, interesting discoveries and the like.
