Assignment 6: completing your first two part invention

You are going to write the third episode of your invention.

You have to modulate from your second key to the home key.

Make a plan for that modulation, and: when you have returned, end your invention with a restatement of material from the very beginning and write a strong cadential ending in which you use some chromaticism which spices up the end.

For example: from a subdominant to #IV7-V7-VI-Np6-V7-I.

Assignment 5

It is good custom in baroque music, when you have modulated, to return to the key of your departure. In some inventions Bach moves via an intermediate key and then back to the home key.

Examples:

1. C-G-a-C
3. D-A-b-D
4. d-F-a-d
6. E-B-g#-E

Assignment: Write the next episode of your invention, this episode has to modulate to an intermediate key of your choice. That key should be of course closely related to the home key. This episode also ends with a clear cadence.

N.B. Don't use exactly the same procedure and material as in your first modulation; it's perfectly ok to reuse the material from the beginning when you are returning to the home key. That will be the third episode after which you will have composed a full blown two-part invention in late baroque counterpoint! :-)

Assignment 4

Here comes your next challenge:

  1. Play or listen to some Bach Inventions in minor keys
  2. Choose an average minor key (avoid keys like Bb minor for example...) and a ternary time signature (I would advise 3/4 or 3/8)
  3. Take the following harmonic framework for the first 4 bars: T | D | T | D | ...(smoothly continuing after the Dominant of course
  4. Use motivic material which makes use of a stepwisepattern ("scale") and a chord pattern ("broken chord")
  5. Your material should imitate when the second part enters
  6. Make a modulating sequence that ends with a clear cadence on the relative major key
  7. Take care that the general musical "feel" of the first four measures is preserved.
As always: enjoy your adventure!

Assignment 3

PDF

Menuet in two parts, lowest part given.

Add a second voice/part in the top staff.

Make two versions:

  1. with notes fitting the implied harmony, using the quarter note as shortest value
  2. with the eight note as shortest value, making use of figuration and tasteful dissonances

For the ambitious: make a third version in which the implied harmonic framework remains the same, but:

  • make the lowest part (rhythmically) more interesting and
  • strive to make both parts musically equal in such a way that a kind of conversation between the two parts is suggested.

Enjoy! I am looking forward to the results. :-)

Assignment 2

The second assignment works the other way around:

We start with a harmonic background:

assignment 2 baroque counterpoint

Write a piece for cello in two versions

1. using strictly the notes of the chords

2. Using "ornamental" notes in the form of passing tones, neighbouring tones, gap-fill with scale fragments, suspensions/apoggiaturas; whatever you consider to be necessary.

Assignment 1

  • Analyse the harmonic outline and write it out as a keyboard setting (1 note left hand, chords right hand)
  • Determine the harmonic rhythm put (*) where the harmony changes in your opinion.
  • Write chord symbols above the staff and degrees below the staff (there is a modulation to the dominant...)
  • Play along with the Spotify recording and make adjustments if your ear prompts you to
